Mirrors can add drama and light to a space, create a focal point, or blend into the background
They’re functional and decorative elements that can enhance any room in your home. There are many mirrors on the market to choose from, so it’s important to find the right one. We’ll help you decide which mirror is best for you
Before you start browsing, below are a few factors to consider before purchasing
Factors to Consider
Glass Quality
● A high-quality mirror glass is free from inconsistencies that distort the reflection. Look for glass that has an even and uniform surface.
Glass Thickness
● Glass mirrors typically come in 1/4-, 1/8- or 3/16-inch thickness. For home décor, we recommend 1/4-inch-thick glass.
Mirror Silvering
● A good mirror should have a thick, high-quality coating of silvering — the silver-nitrate-compound coating on one side of the glass that makes it reflective.
Shape
● Which shape works best with the surroundings? Keep in mind the ambience that you want in the room.
● If you want to add balance to a room with straight lines, opt for a round mirror. If you’re looking for symmetry or want a more modern feel, try geometric shapes
● Play with shapes in unexpected spaces to create a unique look.
Size
● The right-sized mirror makes all the difference. Look for one that doesn’t overwhelm a room. Also, if mounting it on a wall, consider the wall space.
Mirror Mount Types
Full Length
Full-length mirrors — also known as floor-length mirrors or full-body mirrors — are visually dramatic mirrors that you can either mount on the wall, lean against the wall or place on a side stand
They allow you to see your entire body while providing decoration and reflecting natural light
Full-length mirrors are at least 48 inches high. If you want to view yourself in a full-length mirror, look for one that’s at least half of your height tall
Wall Mounted
Wall mounted mirrors are fastened to the wall
When choosing a wall mounted mirror, select one with a frame that complements the wall color and décor
Vanity Mirrors
Also known as makeup mirrors — are sometimes double sided, with one side being a magnifying mirror
Some vanity mirrors also have built-in lighting
Wall mounted versions take up little to no space and come in various finishes to match your décor. They tilt and pivot in a range of directions, and some models extend from the wall
Decorative Mirrors
The right accent mirror can add depth and light to any space
These mirrors can be large or small and are usually decorative, either with a distinct frame, shape, or beveled or etched details.
If you're using a mirror as an accent piece, size and style need to work together
Use these tips to choose the right decorative accent mirror:
Choose a mirror that's larger than any other decorative element on its wall if you want it to become a bold focal point.
Pick a mirror that matches the frame styles on other art if you're adding it to a gallery wall
Mirror Sets
You can have a group of mirrors to create an artistic pattern on your wall
Available in various designs and sizes, decorating a wall with multiple mirrors is a unique way to add a ‘wow’ factor to the room. Best of all, you can incorporate a mirrored wall pattern in just about any type of interior décor style
LED Mirrors
An LED mirror is a mirror that contains LED bulbs, lighting up the surface of it- mostly used in bathrooms or as vanity mirrors. The light provides perfect illumination for doing hair & make-up
The LED lights can be incorporated into the mirror in several different ways. For example, there are back-lit designs, as well as designs whereby there are simply bulbs down the side of the mirror
Room Type & Types of Mirrors
Hallway / Entrance Foyer
You can instantly open-up the hallway space by strategically adding a mirror in a dark corner, or behind a lamp, or over the console table or opposite a window
Hallway mirrors are also ideal for getting in that quick outfit check before you leave or enter the house.
Decorative mirrors in hallways act as decorative as well as functional pieces and look great when paired with a few framed photos or even a gallery wall
Living Room
Having a mirror in your living room serves both purposes – functional and aesthetic. Like wall art, a decorative mirror can centralize the room and give your interiors the extra pizazz it needs
Wall mirrors or decorative mirrors are suitable for living rooms, as they can add character to the space and tie the entire décor together
Bedroom
A practical mirror is a must in the bedroom, to get dressed and do your hair & make-up
Depending on the space and décor, you can choose a full-length mirror or a decorative mirror or a wall mounted mirror to be placed above the dresser / chest of drawers
Bathroom
Centralized over the sink, bathroom vanity mirrors are available in eclectic and innovative designs.
In fact, there are many different types and styles of bathroom mirrors, sizes to suit vanity and basins, and forms of functionality to be considered when buying a bathroom mirror
More Tips
• Add Depth with a Beveled Edge Mirror. Beveled mirrors are an ideal choice for high end contemporary interior designs. Often the eye-catching ‘glint’ of a bevel creates a sense of class and elegance
• If your mirror isn't too dirty, then cleaning can be sorted in seconds by rubbing with warm water on a microfiber cloth - use circular motions to avoid smears
• If the mirror is very dirty, dilute some washing liquid in warm water and clean its surface with a sponge. Then buff away any remaining marks with a clean cloth
• For wall mounted mirrors, consider the weight of the mirror and the method you want to use to hang it on the wall to avoid any accidents
