Food processors such as mixers, grinders & juicers have become essential part of the modern kitchens for the convenience they provide in food preparation. There are multiple options of food processors, and choosing the right one for your requirements is important to avoid buying an appliance which is not useful
Here's a guide to help you buy food processors that best suit your requirements
Factors to Consider
Wattage & RPM
Wattage defines how powerful the processor is. Higher the wattage, higher the capacity to finely grind or blend.
Typically, a 650 W to 700 W mixer grinder will be enough for regular food preparation tasks
RPM (Rotations Per Minute) defines how fast the blades rotate. A higher RPM means that the grinding / blending is quicker
Capacity
Food processing appliances come in varying capacities. For most cooking tasks, a 2.5 Litre capacity is enough. For large quantities, go for higher capacity jars
Look for a processor which offers jars in different sizes
Types of Food Processors
Food Processors
Food processor is a versatile electric appliance that allows you to prepare foods in a variety of ways. From chopping to shredding to mixing dough, a food processor can quickly handle a multitude of tasks in and complete them in minutes
Food Processors typically have 4 parts: a base, a clear plastic body, a set of removable blades, and a lid. Using a combination of jars, blades and attachments, various functions can be performed such as:
Chopping
Grinding / Mincing
Making Puree
Mixing / Blending
Shredding / Grating
Slicing | Kneading
Mixer and Grinders
Mixer Grinder is an indispensable staple in Indian kitchens– used for basic tasks such as making purees, grinding flours, blending chutneys etc.
While selecting, go for a mixer-grinder with 3 jars of different capacity & function. Usually mixer-grinders come with one jar for dry grinding, one for wet grinding and a small jar
Typically, a 500 W to 750 W mixer- grinders will be enough for regular food preps. A mixer-grinder with a power of around 18000 RPM will be sufficient
Juicers
Juicers are used to extract juices from fruits and vegetables
There are two types of juicers, designed for different purposes
Centrifugal Juicer: It takes the fruits and vegetables through a feed tube and directly into contact with a blade that shreds them at 6,000-14,000 RPM. The juice is thrown by the centrifugal force of the spinning basket towards the sides and pushed through a sharp screen into a jug or glass This type of juicers is very popular and economical. However, blades in the juicer tend to heat up due to high RPM, leading to loss of nutrition from the juice
Cold-Presses / Slow Juicers: They use a slow gear to crush fruits and veggies and force against and through a sharp screen at 80 to 100 RPM. Slow juicers can yield more juice than centrifugal juicer, the nutrients are preserved better, and the juice stays fresher longer due to absence of heat. Slow juicers may require more prep work and cleaning
Choppers
Choppers are smaller processors mainly used for chopping vegetables. The choppers can be used for tasks such as chopping, mincing, slicing, grinding, and cubing of ingredients like vegetables, fruits, nuts, meat, and cheese. It can also mince and puree
Choppers are compact in size, have high power and typically have a single jar and may have multiple blades
Typically, choppers are available in 200 W to 250 W power
Hand Blenders
Also called Immersion Blenders, these are used for making soups, purees and blending. Hand blenders are handheld and lightweight, making them very convenient to use directly in the pot
Hand blenders are easy to clean and store
Some hand blenders are also available in wireless variety
Typical hand blenders have a motor capacity of 200 W to 250 W
Juicer-Mixer-Grinders
All-in-one processor which has all 3 functionalities built in one
Typically, available with 3 or 4 jars and attachments for the juicer
Power of juicer mixer grinder typically ranges from 600 W to 1000 W
