Winters are all about chill! If you are one of those who just like to stick to the couch with a blanket, a cup of coffee and a book, you should surely get a room heater and invest in a good water geyser for a warm & comforting bath
Here's a guide to help you choose the heating appliances to keep you warm this winter season
Factors to Consider
Room Size
Efficiency of a room heater is directly related to the size of the room. A small room with limited ventilation will tend to get warmer quicker compared to a large well-ventilated room
The general rule is that 10 watts of power should cover every square foot area in your room. This means that a 1500 W room heater can effectively warm up a room of 150 square feet
It is also important to keep in mind the amount of empty space in the room. It is recommended that you keep room heaters at least 2” away from any furniture, furnishing, bedding, or rugs
Humidity & Oxygen
Some type of heaters (fan type) tends to reduce oxygen levels in a room, which can cause dryness & suffocation if the room is not ventilated
Most heaters reduce the humidity levels in the air due to the heating, which can cause dry eyes & nasal blockage. To counter this, use a humidifier or just keep a bowl of water
Types of Room Heater
Infrared Heaters
These are economical heaters where Halogen heaters to heat up the air
Infrared heaters can hear a room quickly and are compact & portable
These heaters are more suitable for smaller rooms
Infrared heaters consume more energy and are not child safe as the surface of the heater gets considerably hot
Oil Filled Room Heaters
Most effective and popular room heaters, they are safe, compact, and easy to use
Oil Filled Heaters use high grade oil in the reservoir so that the room stays hot for longer, and the heater does not consume a lot of energy.
They may take longer to heat up the room, but the room stays warm even after the heater is turned off
Suitable for larger rooms, these heaters do not have any heating elements, hence are child-safe
Fan Heaters
This is the type of heater that is convenient for heating a large space in a short time. However, they are not very energy efficient
Ceramic coil heats the hot air around it, hence the convection heater quickly creates heat and is safe to touch
This heater includes a fan that will blow out the hot air and thus it will keep your living space hot
Factors to Consider
Electricity Consumption
Electrical consumption by a geyser will depend on your hot water usage.
Therefore, choose a geyser capacity appropriate for the use to avoid heating large volume of water
Heating Element
The heating element is an important component of the geyser, apart from the inner container
Very hard or very soft water can have a damaging effect on the heating element, leading to failure of the geyser
Choose a geyser which has heating element coated with glass lining to prevent scaling, subsequently prolonging the life of the geyser
Wattage
Wattage of the geyser makes it faster or slower. Higher the wattage, water will heat-up faster
Higher wattage geyser can also save electricity as they heat water quickly
Geyser Installation
Always use an authorized and professional technician for geyser installation. Most manufacturers will provide installation services free or at nominal cost
Before installation, ensure that there is an electrical and water connection near the geyser so that there is no additional electrical or plumbing work involved
If the geyser is wall mounted, ensure that there is sufficient space around it to install and service later
Types of Geysers
Instant Geyser
As the name suggests, hot water is available immediately once the power is turned on
These are energy efficient, can run effectively for many years as there is no water tank
Typically, instant geysers have the water tank capacity starting 3 ltrs and can go up to 9-10 litres. Being compact in size, they occupy less wall-space
These are best suited for kitchens – installed at the kitchen sink to wash utensils. Instant water geysers can also be used in bathrooms. However, smaller capacity geysers are not suitable for showers, as they may run out of hot water quickly
Storage Geysers
Storage geysers have a built-in insulated water storage tank. The storage tank capacity ranges from 6 litres and can go up to 100 litres storage capacity
Storage geysers typically consume more power as they heat a large volume of water
Also, the waiting time to get hot water is more- up to 5-10 min depending on the capacity and power of the geyser
The advantage of storage geysers is that they can release hot water continuously without break during bath
Storage heaters are best suited for bathrooms where you can either take a bucket bath or shower or a use a bathtub
Gas Geysers
As the name suggests, gas geysers use LPG and Propane gas to heat the water. A cylinder of LPG needs to be installed besides these geysers and provide supply of gas to the geyser through a pipeline
Gas geysers are suitable for household as well as for commercial establishments
Gas geysers require more space to accommodate the gas cylinder. Also, installation is more difficult than an electric geyser. The space where geyser is installed needs to be well ventilated to avoid accidents due to gas leakage, so installing them inside small spaces like bathrooms is not advisable
Gas geysers are economical and are available as instant as well as storage type geysers. The storage capacity starts from 6 litres, up to 16 litres
Solar Geysers
Typically, installed on the rooftops, Solar geysers use solar power to heat the water
These water geysers use sustainable source of energy and hence are environmentally friendly. However, installing solar geysers require large set-up on the rooftops and is generally expensive
Solar geysers are available only in storage type, with minimum capacity being 100 litres
Solar geysers require continuous sun exposure, and may not work effectively if there’s a cloud cover or at locations which are very cold
Geyser Capacity
You will need to keep in mind the consumption pattern to be able to choose a geyser with the right capacity
Ideal capacity should be close to the hot water volume needed at one go. Here’s a handy table to guide you in the selection
